Deploying windows XP via a.wim file. By MadFly, February 3, 2008 in Windows XP. Recommended Posts. MadFly 0 MadFly 0 0 5 posts; Posted February 3, 2008 (edited) I have downloaded alot of things required to deploy winxp to other pcs on the network, but i need a.wim image of xp. Not completely sure how and with what to create that image.
I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I'm interested in creating a boot disk and was informed that an ISO image can be downloaded from The link offers the following two options to download an ISO file with descriptions of each: 1. Directly download a Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft Tech Bench - An ISO file from Microsoft Tech Bench uses sources install.wim 2. Download Windows 10 ISO using Media Creation Tool - An ISO file from the Media Creation Tool (MCT) uses sources install.esd which is a compressed version of install.wim I have neither install.wim nor install.esd.
Neither was downloaded during the Windows 10 upgrade. (The file that was downloaded is named GetWindows10-pseggl.exe). This raises two questions: 1. Not having install.esd nor install.wim, will I still be able to use the ISO file if I want to do a clean install of Windows 10? Following the upgrade, my system says that Windows 10 is activated, but does not show a product key. The following link, which describes how to install Windows 10 using an ISO file says that a product key is required. How can an install be done using the ISO file when a Windows 10 product key is not available?
Install.wim is the image file contained in the.iso that mounts itself to transfer files. It works in the background so isn't really relevant. Install.esd is another form by which the installation files are transferred for the Upgrade, but also is irrelevant to doing the There's a way to convert an.esd to an.iso but it's more trouble than just downloading the ISO provided. I hope this answers your questions. If not ask back anything you're unclear on. Frankly these are rather arcane and not really important to understand unless working in the internals of the OS.
